Is drinking a glass of wine or a bottle of beer after dinner, not a problem? Incorrect! If you do this every day, you are probably drinking too much. You need to think about how many units you are consuming and why you are drinking.
If you feel that your alcohol use is out of your control and you cannot stop despite trying many times, you should seek help and possibly rehabilitation treatment.
Ask yourself the following questions to assess your alcohol
use:
Do I drink more than 14 units a week?
UK guidelines advise consuming no more than 14 units of alcohol per week. This equates to about 6 medium glasses of wine or 6 pints of wine, so one a day would be too much. Drinking more alcohol puts you at higher risk for many health problems and alcohol problems.
Do I drink more and more?
If you started drinking just one glass a night and then drank a couple then you may develop a tolerance to alcohol. This means that you need more to feel the effect. Drinking more as tolerance increases can lead to physical dependence.
Do I use alcohol as a coping tool?
Many people drink to hide anxious or depressive emotions or thoughts, thinking it helps. However, after the initial "camouflage", alcohol will only make you feel worse.
If you drink every night, consider reducing:
Find a new nighttime routine.
Plan your nights so you don't think about drinking. Perhaps take a stroll around the area after dinner for a quieter meal instead of a glass of wine.
Do not store alcohol in your home.
If you drink every night, you probably have a small amount of alcohol. Lack of alcohol in the home will help you resist.
Focus on the health benefits of avoiding alcohol.
Eliminating alcohol from your nightly routine will bring many different benefits. It will help you save money, improve your health and sleep, and help you in your weight loss efforts.
Tell people about your new goal.
Telling people about your plans to cut down on alcohol can make you feel more compelled to stick with them. Also, your friends and family can support you in your decision.
Think about why you might have had a drink and try to solve
the problem.
Did you drink alcohol due to stress at work? Tough
relationship? Or simply out of boredom? Try to eliminate the cause to reduce
your alcohol consumption.
